Beacon Theatre

Commonwealth Architects is currently providing Architecture, Interior Architecture and Engineering services for the rehabilitation of the historic Beacon Theatre, located in downtown Hopewell, Virginia. The rehabilitation of this important historic landmark has been designated as an official project of Save America’s Treasures by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Constructed circa 1928, the theatre was designed by one of the region’s leading architects, Fred Bishop, and combines architectural elements of Art Deco, Colonial Revival and the Modern Movement. The theatre’s interior features include elaborate Grecian plaster friezes, ornamental plaster, and a domed auditorium which once seated 980 people.

To date, the rehabilitation has focused on structurally stabilizing the building and a comprehensive exterior restoration including complete repointing of all exterior brickwork; restoration of the original windows and storefronts; complete roof replacement; and restoration of the original theatre entrance, ticket booth, marquee and signage.

Interior restoration is expected to begin in the Spring of 2002. The project in its entirety is expected to be complete by the Winter of 2003.
