Bell Grove

Belle Grove (circa 1792) was the birth site of President James Madison. The restoration of this historic manor, for client Haas Machinery, Inc., required a comprehensive building stabilization. Commonwealth Architects structurally reinforced and stabilized the building, which had suffered years of neglect. Once the structural repairs had been completed, four new bathroom additions were designed, to be compatible with, yet discernable from the original design and detailing. These additions were done during the exterior restoration and rehabilitation phase. The project included a new standing seam copper roof and the restoration of the original Seneca Brownstone steps.

Commonwealth Architects is presently providing interior restoration and design services for the building. Working within the clients’ priorities in terms of function, cost, and image, a plan was developed with attention to budget, schedule, and historic integrity.

Ongoing interior restoration is scheduled for completion by December 2002. The project is a certified historic rehabilitation and is eligible for State and Federal Tax Credits.
