Big Meadows Lodge

Commonwealth Architects provided complete architectural services for the rehabilitation of historic Big Meadows Lodge, located in Shenandoah National Park. Constructed in 1938, the lodge required both exterior and interior renovations, including new accommodations for ADA accessibility.

Exterior renovations included much needed repairs to the deteriorated concrete piers and beams supporting the West Terrace, as well as the terrace slab to prevent further damage caused by water leaks; redesign of the existing gutter system which included the addition of copper gutters, downspouts and downspout extensions to properly divert water away from the building; replacement of the Hendrick’s concrete tile roof, subroof, and flashing; restoration of the balcony and main entrance; repair and replacement of exterior carpentry including doors, windows, casings, and siding; and new exterior period sconce lighting.

Interior work at the lodge included the complete renovation of six guest rooms located on the Lower Terrace level of the lodge. ADA improvements to the lodge included the addition of a hydraulic elevator, remodeling the Conference Room with ramped access, and exterior grading to provide unobstructed access to several guest rooms.
