Cary Court Park and Shop

| In 1938, the Cary Court Park and Shop was the first "park and shop" suburban retail complex in Richmond. The one-story shopping center is constructed of limestone, granite and brick in the commercial Art Deco architectural style. Cary Court Park and Shop is recognized by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources as a major force in shaping the direction of twentieth century commercial development in Virginia. A predecessor to the shopping mall, it is a symbol of a change in the architectural character of retail business. The intent of the rehabilitation is to restore Cary Court Park and Shop to its original commercial splendor. Seventeen individual storefronts line the south elevation of the shopping center. The original canopy, hidden under stucco signage panels since 1977, will be refurbished to include the canopy's original pressed tin ceiling and stainless steel fascia. Signage with neon will be added to give the storefronts maximum visibility from Cary Street. Some individual tenant interior spaces will also be updated in this rehabilitation. |
