Hanover Tavern

Located in Hanover, Virginia, the Hanover Tavern is a rare surviving example of a colonial–era tavern. Constructed circa 1780, the frame building had its last major renovation in 1872 and was in need of major renovations to both the interior and exterior of the building.

Under the direction of Historical Architect Douglas J. Harnsberger, an extensive restoration and renovation program began in 1996 to preserve this important historic landmark. The Scope of Work for the project included repairs to the brick foundation requiring complete repointing of the brick work; the installation of a new brick ground-gutter drainage system, brick sidewalks and a granite curb; the restoration of the north porch; the repair of the windows and weatherboard siding; and exterior painting.

Interior restoration and rehabilitation work included the addition of handicapped access to the building; plaster restoration and reconstruction; and carpentry repairs to the wood flooring; trim, and moldings.
