Monumental Church
Built in 1812, Monumental Church is the only surviving “auditorium style”
Neoclassical church designed by Robert Mills, the first American trained architect.
In April 2000, at the request of the Historic Richmond Foundation, Douglas Harnsberger
prepared a Save America’s Treasures Grant application as well as a Project
Preparation Grant application from the Getty Grant Program to secure foundation
funding for the restoration.
Previous restoration work accomplished under Harnsberger’s design and construction administration included the installation of a new standing seam copper roof and a structural analysis of the Delorme Dome to the standards of the Historic American Building Survey (HABS).
