Southern Aid/Atlanta Life Building

OOwned by Interfaith Housing Corporation, the Southern Aid Atlanta Life Building was constructed in 1908 and is located in Richmond, Virginia’s Jackson Ward National and State Historic District at 212-214 E. Clay Street. Commonwealth Architects was selected to provide Historic Architecture and Interior Architecture services for the rehabilitation of this important Art Deco landmark.

The scope of work for the project included rehabilitation of the first floor commercial storefronts and entrances; the cleaning and restoration of all exterior masonry including original brick, granite and marble finishes; the restoration of all original windows, transoms and doors; the restoration of the original main lobby, elevator lobbies and tenant spaces; the installation of new HVAC and electrical systems throughout the building; and the installation of new ADA accessible bathrooms.

The project was completed in December 2001, and has been recognized as a certified historic rehabilitation project by the State of Virginia and the National Park Service.
